Colour: How it affects us psychologically.

Yes, colour can affect your mood and your behaviour! Each of us perceives colour differently - colour comes with emotion and influence. Have you ever walked into a boldly coloured room and thought "get me out of here!?" Well you're not the only one. Colours trigger a reaction in us; some colours we instinctly associate with fear and danger such as yellow and black stripes.

When the sky is grey, we instinctively want to hibernate. When spring flowers emerge, we automatically feel more alive and alert. Our reactions to colour, positive or negative, depend on an individual's personality and relationships within certain colour combinations. Because colours are a result of light reflecting upon surfaces (there would be no colour, without light/energy) some studies have shown that people can feel the difference between blue and red materials without seeing the colours.

So how do certain colours affect us positively and negatively:

Red is known for it's physical psychological affects;

Positive affects:

- physical courage

- strength

- warmth

- energy

- basic survival

- 'fight or flight'

- stimulation

- masculinity

- excitement

Negative affects:

- defiance

- aggression

- visual impact

- strain

Green is known for its balancing affects on people.

Positive affects:

- harmony

- balance

- refreshment

- universal love

- rest

- restoration

- reassurance

- environmental awareness

- equilibrium

- peace

Negative affects:

- boredom

- stagnation

- blandness

- enervation

- fatigue
